South Africa faces a significant gap in mental health care due to a shortage of mental health professionals. Task-sharing is a new approach where trained non-specialist health workers provide basic mental health services, particularly for underserved communities. Task-sharing is accomplished by training and supervising lay counsellors to provide mental health support. By delegating skills, a single registered therapist can extend their reach, significantly increasing access to mental health services.
One of the founding members, Daniel Rabinowitz - a clinical psychologist, recognised the limitations of reaching only a small number of clients individually. He explored the task-sharing model as a way to extend the reach of registered mental health providers. He started by supervising the first hub lay counsellors from his practice in Sea Point.
