About Kuthetha Nathi / Talk to Us

Who are we?

Kuthetha Nathi / Talk to Us is an non-profit organisation (NPO) counselling service which operates in Cape Town, South Africa. The organisation offers low-cost counselling services through its trained lay counsellors who provide skilled-based support. There is a large gap between the demand for mental health services and the amount of registered mental health service providers. Kuthetha nathi / Talk to us addresses this gap by offering counselling services to all individuals, regardless of their circumstances on a sliding scale basis.

Grief

Grief is the emotional response to loss, often involving sadness, anger, or disbelief. It is a natural, personal process that helps individuals cope with death, separation, or significant life changes, typically unfolding in stages, such as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

Relationships

Relationships involve connections between individuals, shaped by communication, trust, and emotional bonds. Healthy relationships foster mutual support, understanding, and respect, while unhealthy ones can lead to conflict, stress, and dissatisfaction. Effective communication and empathy are key to building and maintaining strong relationships.

Work Burnout

External Stressors and Trauma

Work burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress or overwork. It leads to reduced performance, feelings of detachment, and loss of motivation. Addressing work burnout involves setting boundaries, seeking support, and taking time for rest and self-care.

External Stressors and Trauma

External stressors—such as financial difficulties, family and cultural expectations, crime, and illness—can take a toll on our mental well-being. These ongoing pressures often contribute to symptoms like anxiety, depression, irritability, anger, and fatigue, as well as physical issues such as headaches and gastrointestinal problems. Whether acute or chronic, these stressors can significantly impact health, making it essential to adopt effective coping strategies like relaxation, time management, and seeking support. Counselling offers a confidential space to discuss and process these challenges, helping to ease their burden.

Adjustment

Lay counsellors help individuals manage adjustment disorders by providing emotional support, teaching coping strategies, and fostering resilience. Adjustment is the process of adapting to life changes, relying on problem-solving, social support, and emotional regulation. Effective counselling reduces stress, promotes healthy adaptation, and prevents long-term distress. With guidance, individuals can regain stability and navigate transitions more smoothly.

What cannot be managed by our counsellors?

What cannot be managed by our counsellors?

What cannot be managed by our counsellors?

Complex, and often 'psychiatric', disorders cannot be managed by our counsellors. Such disorders could include, but are not limited to: personality disorders (like narcissism, borderline and antisocial), psychotic disorders (like schizophrenia, psychosis and schizoaffective) and other complex mood and anxiety disorders (like major depressive disorder, bipolar mood disorder and panic disorder). Such conditions warrant skilled and specialised intervention practiced by psychologists, psychiatrists, or other trained mental health professionals. Due to the complex nature of children's behavioural concerns, our counsellors are also not permitted to attend to to anyone under the age of 18 years of age.
